Volunteer Mentor (2852)

Do you have the skills to empower a young person to develop and grow? Would you like to help support young migrants in your community?

The Children’s Society's Connecting Opportunities project provides support and guidance to young migrants in Leeds, giving them the direction and the confidence to make sound life choices.

We’re looking for Volunteer Mentors to help support the young migrants who access our service to develop their skills and interests, increase their confidence and help them to be part of the local community.

Typical tasks could include:

  • To support the young person to achieve their personal goals and increase their independent living skills, either as a one to one befriender/mentor or by supporting them in a group setting
  • To support the young person in developing their conversational English language skills in a patient and non-judgemental way
  • To support the young person in accessing opportunities around education and employment by helping them with things such as paperwork, making appointments, etc.
  • To help ensure the young person has a voice in making decisions that affect them
  • Organise day trips with the young person that are relevant to their interests (e.g. visiting libraries, cinema, shops, galleries, theatres, youth clubs and restaurants)
  • Liaise, communicate and build relationships with the young person and their family/carers, staff and volunteers within the project and other professionals

No qualifications are required as full training will be provided, but good listening and communication skills are vital, as well as the ability to make people feel welcome and at ease, especially for young people for whom English may be a second language.

To be effective in this role, we ask that you are able to volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours per week for one year or more.

This would be an excellent opportunity for a reliable, friendly and well-organised person to gain experience of supporting vulnerable young people whilst making a real difference to the lives of young migrants.

The role description provides more information on the tasks involved, so please have a read and if you think this could be the role for you, we would welcome your application.

If you have any difficulty applying, please get in touch with the Volunteering Team on 020 7841 4602 / volunteeringteam@childrenssociety.org.uk or if you have any questions about the role please get in touch with Lindiwe Mapuranga at Lindiwe.mapuranga@childrenssociety.org.uk
